Scavvies
The scavvies are UnderHivers from the lowest, and hence most highly polluted and dangerous, levels. They are social outcasts due to their diseased, deformed and wretched appearance. Most are born down here, but some are outcasts from above, hunted criminals, heretics, failed gangters, escaped slaves and genetic deviants.
The scavvies are a brutal class, and make ferocious fighters. They eat what ever they can, including each other. They do not have access to the Re-cycs as Ministorum officials and other Hivers shoot them on sight. They hate the Hivers that keep them on the lower levels and at the same time often crave acceptance so as to get out of the pit they are in.
The unsanitised cannibalism of the scavvies mean that dieases spread more quickly and rapidly than in any other population. Scavvies try to eat rats and spiders, but these are often more dangerous than rival tribes. Clean water is scarce and advanced tech. almost unknown. Most scavvies fight with improvised weapons, bows, clubs, slings. Some have crossbows, other may have even found or stolen a gun and bullets. Resources are rare down here and life is hard and short. The lower levels of a Spire are one of the worst places to live in the entire Imperium. Unsuprisingly, despite the greater room on these levels, they contain the lowest population. Some Spire lower levels are so toxic or irradiated that nothing lives down there at all. Some have no water. Some are open to the elements, the Spire shell having corroded long ago. Often the scavvies in lower levels may all die due to an epidemic, water running out, a Hive-quake or simple starvation. Those that survive down hear are the toughtest and most insane humans that live in the Hives. Many worship the Chaos gods, typically Nurgle and sometimes Khorne.
All scavvies fear Venators.
Two major tribes have played a part in the campaign. The Family of Hope and the Black Rag.
The Black Rag
This gang assume a fierce and barbaric appearance, they chip their teeth into points and scarify their faces around the cheeks. Their fithly hair is cut into top-knots and they wear bones as tropies. Importantly, these scavvies have found a Spook cache on the lowers levels. They have come to understand its potential as a bargaining chip, and have more important things to think about (ie: survival) than making constant use of it. The scavvies have been able to trade Spook for weapons with rich UpperHivers. Also the Black Rag know their way through the air vents because they have found the abandoned air-shafts. It is in this way they meet their customers. It also allows them to make lightening raids, sometimes for weapons or water, sometimes to capture workers to drag away and eat.
These scavvies worship the Great Rat and are experts at breeding and training the dog-sized rats that live in the Hive. They see the rat as a subversive creature that eats at the foundations of human life, gnawing at its roots. The scavvies worship is so fervant and sincere that its energy has pooled (or perhaps it was already there) and become deified in the Warp. The Black Rag hope to invoke the image of the Rat, so that it can tear down and destroy the hated Spire.
Their religion has become so sick and debased that they see the Rat as a higher form of life, a strong, sleek hunter with none of the more complex problems of human life. It is a survivor in all conditions. In their desire in wanting to be like the Rat they imitate its tactics and habits. Indeed, like early Earth humans who learnt how to hunt better from wolves, the scavvies have learnt from the Rat. Some of the psychically aware scavvies have formed empathic attachments to these beasts. They have become priests of the Great Rat, a channel for Its voice. These same scavvies breed with the rats.
Somehow, the hand of Chaos or the course of (de)evolution has allowed the birth of monstersfrom these scavvies and rats that have interbred. These deiant babies have grown to be a human-rat hybrid of malformed, beastman-like subspecies. Some are mindless, psychopathic, insane or extremely cunning individuals. They have varying rat-like features, some just have whiskers and yellow eyes, through by degrees to bodily fur, tails, hunched back and rats heads. They drive forward with sharp yellow teeth and poisoned claws with the other scavvies.
One stronger, more intelligent rat-man has dominated the scavvies and the rat-scavvies. She is an albino with curled goats horns atop her head and possess potent psychic abilityand technological genius. To some extent she can control rats. She aims to invoke the rat and has had a Temple built. The Horned Albino desires the deaths of the Hivers above who want to detroy her and her tribe. The rat-people are a greater, more worthy race.
